Action types

As Freeway grows and becomes more and more powerful so too does the actions technology. Here we unravel the differences between the formats and action types we've seen over the years.

Simple actions
Simple actions were really the first breed of actions to appear in the application and heralded a new way of adding complex functionality to Freeway generated sites. Although quite limited compared to later versions of the actions technology they are easy to write and offer a lot of power for minimal development time.

Simple actions are ideally suited to adding blocks of code of any sort (be it HTML, PHP, ASP, JavaScript or anything for that matter) to web pages. Interface controls can be utilized to allow the code to be modified (to a certain extent) based on user input.

Complex actions
Before you get scared and run off let me tell you that that complex is maybe a little on the strong side here. Complex actions appeared in version 3 of the application and opened up a whole new avenue of creating and modifying sites with actions. Since then every copy of the application has carried a JavaScript 'engine' at its heart allowing actions to interact directly with the web pages in these documents. In addition to the ability to add custom code to the page (as we could do with simple actions) for the first time actions could start to manipulate the HTML that Freeway was generating allowing them to create quite complex pages based on the code they found.

FAST actions
FAST actions are close cousins of the complex action. Under their skin they have the same structure and power but they offer a number of features and enhancements that the complex action cannot come near to.

For a start FAST actions are encoded. Prior to FAST an action file could be easily opened and edited in any text editor. This can quickly lead to numerous versions of the same action being created which in turn can lead to confusion and issues in supporting the software.
FAST actions also have a few extra features up their sleeve that allow them to accomplish some of the complex tasks that we can see in the first batch released from Softpress.
To run FAST actions you will need either
Freeway Express or Freeway Pro as both of these applications contain important code that allows them to work in harmony. Previous versions of the application (3.5.6 and below) are restricted to using simple and complex actions.
While
Express won't run either of these Pro will quite happily.
